Ew, period talk!
I promise I’m not super granola… I don’t make my own deodorant or anything like that, but I learned about non-organic tampons and had to make this particular change.
Non-Organic Tampons Contain:
GMO (genetically modified) cotton
Chlorine to bleach them white
BPA in applicators
To name a few…
You wouldn’t put a bleached, pesticide treated cotton swab in your mouth for five-ish days every month, so why would you do the same to your lady parts? Your parts are a mucous membrane just like your mouth, nose, digestive tract… so it’s important to be mindful of what you’re (literally) putting into it.
The average woman uses 11,000 + tampons in her lifetime. That’s a higher quantity than the organic blueberries you buy, more than the BPA-free water bottles you’ve entrusted and more than the bleach free household cleaner you purchase.
Did you know that your lady parts are the most absorbent part of your body?
To me, it just makes sense to switch. I ordered organic tampons (and pads) from The Honest Company on Amazon (link below). They were a tad more expensive than regular tampons, but such is the case with all organic products.
I didn’t notice any difference in comfort or abosrbancy using these tampons verses non-organic tampons. But I did notice that there wasn’t nearly as much emphasis on the warning signs about TSS. I guess it never occurred to me before that toxic shock syndrome was caused by the over absorbency of the chemical concocsion in conventional tampons. Organic tampon boxes do mention a TSS warning as leaving anything foreign in your body for an extended period of time isn’t healthy, but the main concern with TSS is derived from the toxic chemicals in conventional tampons.
Using products that contain toxic chemicals also increases the chances of period pains because your body will try to get rid of something it senses shouldn’t be inside of you.
I think that overall, this is a much healthier choice for a woman’s body. With such a health conscious world today, organic tampons are going to definitely be a more relevant thing. (Target even started selling them!)
