I’m super passionate about wellness. It has completely changed my life in every way. I am obsessed with eating/doing/experiencing anything that is good for you, but I understand that it is both intimidating and confusing. I’ve been on this journey to live a fuller, healthier life for years and I’ve learned a TON along the way. If I could tell myself at the beginning of my journey anything, it would be everything that I’ve detailed in this post. So wherever you are at in your journey to being well, I hope that you find something beneficial;

Becoming Well;
What is wellness? Why now?

Wellness is without a doubt a journey. There is no one thing that you can do that will make you well overnight. I’ll say that again, there is no one thing you can do to make yourself well overnight. I believe that wellness is a series of things that are strung together to create a beautifully, well body, mind & spirit.

Wellness is also extremely personal. What works for me may not work for you.

So why now? I’m obsessed with the wellness hype. What a time to be alive… health is very much so becoming a priority to everyone, which was not the case even just a few years ago. I think it’s exciting and crucial. It is absolutely time to take back your/our health. But why now? Why has no one figured out earlier that matcha lattes are the shit and that turmeric is your best friend? Or that meditation and acupuncture is something you should do regularly? They have… like a long, long time ago. In fact, ANCIENT Chinese medicine has been using these practices, well, forever. So why is everyone just jumping on the bandwagon now? Because people are sick. America is sick. People are becoming frustrated with the weight gain, the brain fog, the fatigue, the disease, the feeling of being un-well. Unfortunately, our culture has spent a whole lot of time reversing or un-doing what a lot of ancient practices have mastered. But not anymore… it’s time to take back our health. It’s time to take back your health. And in turn, your fullest life.


 

What You Need To Know
About Gut Health;

Probiotics, kombucha, water kefir, yogurt, fermented everything… Perhaps you’ve heard of these health terms before, but have you embraced gut health? In my opinion (and the opinion/factual research of numerous doctors and scientists), above anything else, gut health is key. You know how I said (twice) above that there isn’t any single thing you can do to become well overnight? Well if you could do one, single thing to become well, choose this. Gut health absolutely has an overall effect on your entire health and well being.

So what is gut health? In keeping this simple (as it is the 101 course) your digestive tract is full of bacteria, both good and bad. Ideally, you’d like to have more good than bad as good bacteria is literally your best friend; aiding in digestion, deciding what parts of the foods you eat get into your body through your gut wall, playing the role of your metabolism and acting as your immune system. However, (really) poor diets, antibiotics, environmental factors, unknown food sensitivities/intolerances, genetics, child-hood, stress and poor personal care products have DRASTICALLY compromised our guts; increasing the bad bacteria and lowering the good.

Bad bacteria is bad. So bad, that it can make you addicted to sugar, keep you in a constant hunger mode and make you sick.

So how do you restore your gut health? Eliminate the junk; sugar, grains (if you can), food that isn’t food (soy, GMOs, processed crap). And eat things that are good for you; vegetables, wild-caught fish, seasonal fruits, healthy fats, black coffee and fermented foods. Take probiotic capsules, drink plenty of water and give yourself a good night fast every single night (stop eating about twelve hours before you plan to eat breakfast) to give your good bacteria a chance to rest and restore themselves. You know how you should shut off your phone every so often and restart your computer? Same idea.

One last thing you should know about gut health; you’ve spent your life ruining your gut so it’s going to take some time to restore it. Rome wasn’t built in a day, so be patient. Our bodies are amazingly resilient, and they will heal, but it takes your patience and commitment to health in order to see results.


 

It Takes A Village
To Keep You Healthy

I’ve been really trying to build up an arsenal of health. With there being so many dimensions to being and staying well, it is important to have go-to people that you trust to provide you with exceptional care. I’ve found a holistic care provider that I love, a therapist that I love, an esthetician that I love and tons of spiritual go-tos. I’m still in search for a good massage therapist.

A health team takes time to build, but it really is worth doing. Especially if you are new to health-ing. Find someone that lets you ask as many questions as your little heart desires and someone that isn’t just interested in giving you a quick fix pill. There is a time and place for medicine, but health is achievable in so many other ways.

Ask around, read reviews, have an open mind and don’t always just go with the first person you have an appointment with.


 

Do You &
Do What You Can

One downfall to all of the recent wellness/health/fitness/diet hype is that it all looks so… unachievable. Bloggers and influencers are super guilty (myself included) of making being healthy and being well look like it’s an easy, affordable walk in the park.

The truth is, that it very much so can be easy, affordable and a walk in the park… but most people don’t see it that way. Especially at first.

If that’s you, if you’re having a hard time getting started or keeping it going, if you’re overwhelmed or intimidated by all things wellness then seriously just do what you can. Wellness is a journey, remember? And it’s personal, remember? So do you. If that means starting by slowly eliminating unhealthy things instead of quitting them cold turkey, then do it. If that helps you, then do it. If meditating for three minutes instead of twenty works better for you right now, then do it.

Wellness is more of a mind shift/perspective change than anything else. And it’s challenging to reverse what you’re used to doing or what you have been taught all of your life. And you will always be learning and refining. Right now, I feel like I’m even refining my “healthy” foods. What you think you know about health/wellness can always be taken to the next level. So just start SOMEWHERE. I promise starting will motivate you to go further. You will learn and grow and fall in love with the changes/results in your life/body.


 

Wellness is
All Around Health

Being well is not limited to what you eat and how much you sweat. Those are both huge factors and you should embrace diet & exercise, but they are absolutely not everything when it comes to wellness.

Wellness also the health of your relationships. Your emotional/mental well-being. Your outlook on life. Your spiritual health.

Finding balance with all of these things is challenging, no doubt. But it’s the constant struggle to find balance that actually brings us humans happiness. We’re problem solvers; so when we’re content with our exercise routine, we’re solving problems with our relationships. When we’re content with our relationships, we find ourselves soul searching. When we’ve found our purpose, we find ourselves working to change our diets. It’s all about the wellness journey.


 

You’re Never Really
Done Here

And last, but certainly not least in your 101 course to wellness; you’re never actually done.

Wellness is an onion; you will peel back layers of yourself that you didn’t know existed. And those layers will reveal something new. Sometimes that’s good and others it’s bad.

For example, I get the following question all of the time:

“How can you eat and live so healthy but have awful acne?”

The answer is; I don’t know. I trust my very strong intuition that my skin issues are related to my lack of health for so long. I was on an antibiotic for three years straight, on top of serious depression and a bad diet. All of which wrecked havoc on my body. I don’t know how long it will take to restore my health so much so that my skin will be healed (indefinitely), but I’m doing everything right to take steps towards that direction.

It’s kind of like being a Christian; it doesn’t exempt you from sin or from bad things happening to you. But it does provide you with the intuition, the tools, the hope and the strength to press on and get through. To heal. To manage.

I think it’s worth noting that the healthier you become, the more in-tune with your body you become. You’ll notice on your journey that you become very intuitive about your body, mind and spirit. It’s often why healthy people start to have health issues. It’s not because those issues resulted in them being healthy, it’s because they had those issues all along but were never in-tune with themselves enough to notice. They were fluffed by all of the unhealthy aspects of their life.

Being well does not mean that you will never get sick. It doesn’t mean that you won’t deal with something like acne or maybe even a chronic illness. But it does absolutely decrease your chances and it does absolutely improve your quality of life.

So the choice is yours. It’s always been yours. & it always will be yours.

It doesn’t have to be intimidating or overwhelming or hard. It can very much so be one step at a time. Baby steps, even. But it has to be something. Wellness is everything, if you let it be. Embrace it and see what it will do for your life.


 

Party Favors;
Take Home Practical Things

Some back-to-basics, practical, quick tips to help you on your wellness journey:

  • Journaling is life. You cannot possibly remember everything; your thoughts, how you felt after eating certain things, lists, ideas, dreams, goals… So just freaking write it down.
  • Stop eating things with ingredients that you can’t pronounce, remember later or type into google without double checking the spelling. Nothing about any of that is ever good for you. On a side note, did you know that a Twinkie has 37 ingredients; only 1 of which is real food (mashed bananas).
  • Forget diets and eat intuitively. For example, I was never drawn to meat. I never really loved it and I never felt like it was benefiting my body when I ate it. So stopping was easy. I’m not suggesting that you should stop eating meat, I’m just providing an example of intuitive eating.
  • Fruit is great, seasonally.
  • Not all vegetables are vegetables, a lot are fruits. With that being said, fruit is great… seasonally.
  • Be honest with yourself about your habits.
  • Cashews and peanuts are not nuts. Nuts are good. Things that look like nuts aren’t.
  • Find a balance in your workout routine. For example, don’t just lift, lift and lift. Compliment lifting with something like yoga.
  • Eat at least two warm meals a day. Shocking your body constantly with cold salads and freezing smoothies doesn’t do our 98 degree biome any good.
  • Look for what’s going right in life.
  • Go to bed with a real book, not an electronic one.
  • Be a little bit scared about what you’re doing all of the time.
  • Get quiet at least once a day.
  • Drink red wine & good champagne.
  • Don’t try to exceed more than 30 grams of protein per day.
  • Listen to podcasts.
  • Check yourself out in the mirror often.
  • Embrace your spirituality.
  • Use organic tampons.
  • Pay off debt.
  • Spend money on experiences, not things.
  • Spend your time doing things you actually want to be doing.
