I told my yogi students the other day at class – this is what we’ve prepared for. The entire point of a yoga practice (or any spiritual practice) is to learn the tools, practice the tools, condition the mind/body/soul and prepare…. for THIS.
Our world is experiencing something so unique right now. History is being made right before our eyes and all I’ve heard is “we’re unprepared for this.”
Sorry, no. You are more than prepared for this. You see – life’s challenges don’t send you a notice detailing what exactly is going to happen. And they certainly don’t shed any light as to how you’re supposed to respond. Sure, you can look back on similar situations and try to make some educated guesses or predictions. But at the end of the day, no one is ever sure of what tomorrow will bring.
We know this. We’ve known this all along. But we forget. We say things like “tomorrow isn’t guaranteed” but when that actually becomes our reality, things start to feel out of control.
But here’s the thing. Everything in your life up until this point… every unique situation you’ve found yourself in, every quote you’ve saved that inspired you, every page you’ve dog-eared in the books you’ve read, every challenge and obstacle you’ve overcome ALL have uniquely prepared you for what is happening right now. Rest assured, you are prepared.
What you choose to do with this, however, is ultimately up to you. You can lose all of your trust in yourself and react. Or, you can choose to put those tools to use and change the course of history. Not just in your own life/families lives but potentially on a global scale.
Here’s a couple things to keep in check during this time;
Make a list of all of the things that you just now realized you’ve been taking for granted. Write them down. And make a very conscious effort to make sure you don’t ever slip on gratitude again. Gratitude is everything. The act of being thankful vibrates on the highest of levels. It is single-handedly the most effective way to change your life. But when we forget to feel a sense of gratitude for something, when we slip up and take things for granted – we’re left with chaos, lack and depression. If you’re finding yourself saying “things won’t ever be the same after this” I challenge you
Check your intentions. Being prepared is great. Stocking up is great. Taking precautions is great. Every single one of us has a responsibility to show up and take care of ourselves & our household. BUT (and this is a big but) – if you’re doing all of this with fear-based intentions, it will backfire every single time. It is the difference between a savings account and a rainy day fund – one is created with the intention of being prepared to purchase something later on and the other is created out of fear of something happening and having lack as a result. Both are essentially the same thing but entirely different when you look solely at the intention. The intention matters. Now more than ever. Check your heart & check it twice.
Be kind. Never in history before has the human race ALL felt the same exact thing. This virus doesn’t discriminate, though we will. Be kind to people. Even to the ones who are acting out of fear and uncertainty. Your kindness, big or small, can make or break this situation.
Most importantly – be well. Practice all of your go-to self care rituals. Stay home. Stay productive but also rest. Utilize this time to create, learn and evaluate. Now that you have a little break from everything that you’re so used to doing, it is a perfect time to audit your life. What do you still love? What would you choose again? What are you hoping remains the same and where do you feel a little bit satisfied over the things that are cancelled?
